Añoñi

Three years into this gig and we are definitely still learning a lot. that applies to pretty much everything, but certainly to the acquisition of Spanish - and Colombian Spanish to be more exact. The hard thing about other languages (and knowing that you are still not proficient in them) is that it is difficult to know whether you don't understand something someone said because:

A) You did not hear them well B) You do know know the word they used C) Even knowing all of the words they used you simply still have no idea what they are talking about.

Costeñol can sometimes mess with a person's brain on all three fronts. This time it was a "B" (not knowing the word) masquerading for a long time as an "A" (thinking I had not heard them well). After all, it is kind of a weird word...

Añoñi (ah-nyo'-nyi): idiom – of course, indeed, obviously, duh.

Ex: Did you have a good time at the party last night? Dude, añoñi!

However, though I think it would be funny, it would evidently not be used like this - not that I have personal experience or anything...

Where’s My Papaya?

When I first got here I wrote about how Spanish is not Spanish is not Spanish. That is to say, each country (and here in Colombia each region) has its own way of talking as do we in the United States and in English-speaking countries around the world. After two years and change here, I am still learning things all the time - whether it be new words, new uses for words, finally understanding the words, or adding on whole phrases or sayings (dichos). During the Sub-20 World Cup here in Colombia this year, a bank aired commercials of a foreign correspondent (Australian? German? US? Who knows where he was supposed to be from...) who kept misunderstanding things to either his detriment or for the hilarity of others. Though a couple seemed a bit mean-spirited, it was a pretty clever campaign. We always ran to the neighbors to watch whenever they came on - in part because they were just funny, and in part because we completely understood where this poor drub was coming from. So at the tienda across the street one day I started telling folks about my own run-ins with Costeñol, and I swear I may have never seen people laugh so hard. I am sure it was the way I told the story... To save you a little embarrassment, I offer you two lessons:

“Costeñol Dichos del Dia”

Dar la Papaya (said pretty much just how it looks): Now, if you take this phrase literally, it means to give the papaya (the fruit). And there is no reason to think otherwise, except that it rarely makes sense that way in context. Upon asking I found that it is actually to open the door to a jokeñ to invite someone to make fun of you or make you the butt of a joke. This makes much more sense in context, and explains a lot about why no one ever came back to give me a papaya. AND, your bonus for today... Pa'llá (pah' - yah'): This is actually two words put together. Those with a critical eye may have noticed the stress marks on both syllables (impossible in one word), although it can be a little harder to hear. When I first arrived I talked with people who often said they were going "pa'llá." I thought that perhaps pa'llá was a town nearby that must be terribly lovely because virtually everyone seemed to be going there. Only later did I find out that they were saying "para allá" - I am going "over there," or just "there." Gah. AND because my generosity seems to know no bounds (though knowing Spanish is going to make this much better) here are some clips from the bank commercials. The 2010 World Cup had ones with a Colombian in South Africa getting things all wrong, so I guess turn about is fair play. :) 1. Bomba - A bomb. Or a gas station. You can understand the confusion. 2. Costeñol – ¿Qué Vaina?

The word "vaina" is a little more complicated than it seems. Its actual definition, if one looks it up, would say something like this: 1. The sheath which holds a knife, sword, machete or other sharp, cutting object. 2. A large pod holding the seeds of some plants. And there are probably more options if you asked folks in other Spanish-speaking countries. But we are not talking about Spanish; we are talking about Costeñol...hence:

“Costeñol Palabra del Dia”

Vaina (vI'-nuh): noun – Thing. This seems really simple, but it is the breadth of usage that makes it more interesting. First, it is not just any old thing - that is a "cosa." Although if you ask someone here what a "vaina" is then they will tell you it means the same things as "cosa." Still, somehow when "vaina" gets used there is always more ooph behind it. Hmmm...better with examples I think. 1. "Es la misma vaina." It is the same thing. Used with great emphasis. For instance - you are irritated because you ask for something and you are told it is unavailable. Then you see someone walking out of the store with the thing you just asked for. You go back in and say, "Hey, I thought you said you did't have 'x' thing, but I just saw a woman walking out of the store with one." To which they say, "That is not 'x', that is 'y'." And you reply, with hands waving, "¡Pero es la misma vaina!" or After hearing your friend get up on their typical soap box for the 37th time, you finally respond a bit breathless and frustrated... "With you it is always la misma vaina!" 2. ¡Que vaina! What the... After clearing the table you walk into the kitchen and just before you get to the sink you slip and the dishes go crashing to the floor. Your sister hears the ruckus and as she runs toward the kitchen you hear her yelling... "¿¡Qué vaina?!" 3. Other general uses of the term You have asked your daughter 9 times to take her shoes to her room before someone trips on them. After picking yourself up off the floor and peeling her sandal off your face you yell... "Get down her and pick up esta vaina RIGHT NOW!" and If you are still not sure what I'm talking about, I guess you'll just have to come visit and hear esta vaina for yourself!
