Colombia news from the last week

Ferdanando Botero's "Banderillas 1987"

It took me awhile, but it finally occurred to me to compile some of the many articles and posts about Colombia that I sift through each week.  So here is a first installment.  The first list is from a English language news source here in Colombia, and second is a collection of blog posts.  I’ve also added a news feed of Colombia news on the right side bar, if you need more constant info!  More to share?> – Add them in the comments…

And now some links from blogs around the web focused on Colombia:

Adam Isaacson’s “Plan Colombia and Beyond” blog – a favorite source

From the Latin American Working Group – a review of the first year of Obama’s Latin American relations

I read this story in Slate earlier this week. It first caught my attention because it’s kind of unusual to see stories about Colombia in the U.S. press. This story focuses on a new report stating that Plan Colombia has added to violence and hasn’t really impacted coca production.

I’m really put out with LAWG. As far as I’m concerned they have no interest in finding out the truth about situations, they only have a political agenda they serve under the ruse of being impartial and well informed. I’ve responded to their stories several times, directly emailing the leaders and they have ignored me every time.
BTW, we have neighbors from Columbia, they are a joy to talk with because their spanish is so nice.

    Mark –
Good to see you on here. Do you all have a site your updating?

In regards to LAWG – I’m sorry you’ve had a bad experience with them and that they haven’t responded. As for having agendas – it is not surprising to me at all that in the world of Latin American politics, groups are not seen as impartial. I have found them a helpful resource for information and analysis concerning the problems of human displacement and conflict we see here in Colombia.

And finally – my guess is your neighbors are from the interior of Colombia, and not the coast. People here speak so fast, and eat half the letters – I’m still constantly behind… So enjoy that good spanish when you can!

    Peace~Richard
